What should I do while waiting for an emergency dental appointment?
If you have a toothache, call your dentist as soon as possible, so they can diagnose and treat the cause of the toothache. Until your appointment, try rinsing your mouth with warm salt water. Use dental floss to get rid of any food particles that could be causing discomfort. Take over-the-counter pain medication to see if it helps with pain relief. And apply a cold compress to the area to reduce swelling.
If your dental filling or crown breaks, try to save any pieces that come out of your mouth. Don’t chew on that side of your mouth until you can make a dental appointment. Your dentist likely will recommend that you use dental cement to temporarily hold your crown in place until your appointment. You can buy dental cement at most pharmacies. At your appointment, your dentist will replace the filling or crown to prevent further damage or infection.
