Gum Disease Treatment in Charlotte, NC

Gum disease, or periodontal disease, is an infection in the gingiva (gums) and bones that hold your teeth. Early treatment for gum disease is important because gum health affects your teeth’s roots and overall tooth health.

The earliest sign of gum disease is gingivitis. Symptoms of gingivitis include gum redness or swelling or bleeding when you brush or floss your teeth. Without treatment, the gums may start to pull away from the teeth, leaving spaces called periodontal pockets where bacteria can accumulate.

More advanced gum disease can get into the jawbone. When it does, the bone can break down and even cause tooth loss.

  • How can I reverse gum disease?

You can usually reverse gum disease with early treatment. Our treatment depends on how advanced your gum disease is, but usually includes:

    • Scaling and root planing: For the early to moderate stages of gum disease. We access the area below the gum line to remove any plaque, tartar, and bacteria. We smooth root surfaces to prevent future accumulation. After this procedure, the gums often start to heal.
    • Bone grafting: for when bacteria and plaque reach the jawbone. We surgically access your bone to add proteins and bone-like material to the decayed area, which encourages new bone growth.
  • Does vaping cause gum disease?

The extra nicotine from vaping may make you more prone to gum disease. Vaping also dries out your mouth, which means saliva can’t clear out bacteria as easily. It’s important to get regular check-ups because when you vape, you may not notice early signs of gum disease. Your gum tissues may not swell or bleed, even if there is an issue.

  • Is gum disease hereditary?

Some types of gum disease may be hereditary, including aggressive periodontitis. It’s likely a genetic condition that shows up in families and advances quickly. You also may inherit risk factors, such as dry mouth, that make you more likely to get gum disease.
